Brief History of Dressage

Dressage is a type of competitive Horse Training – in fact the word Dressage has French roots, and is literally interpreted to mean “training”. The goal of Dressage Training is to bring out the horses Natural abilities in Athletics, and Performing through extensive training practices.

Dressage has extensive roots and was recognized as a valued equestrian pursuit during the times of the Renaissance. The European Master Horse Trainers of this time developed extensive systems of sequential training for the Horses, and not much has changed since this period. In fact, this discipline is called “Classical” Dressage and is directly linked to what would be referred to as Modern Dressage.

The Dressage Training practice was displayed in pageants by Early Europeans rather than actual competition and testing in various areas as Modern Dressage is. In Modern Dressage Judges evaluate and score a Dressage competitor in a variety of areas.
